speaking and listening
“I felt it shelter to speak to you.” – Emily Dickinson
My sister and I have that magical sisterly ability that allows us to vent to each other simultaneously — to literally be talking over each other at the same time — and end the “conversation” feeling better.
Sometimes we just need to speak. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if the person we’re talking to is listening.
And sometimes it matters a lot. Sometimes the thing we need most in the world is someone who listens. And hears us.
And most of the time, I can’t really recognize a rhyme or reason to any of it.
Being a girl comes with an inherent need to speak. And an inherent need to be heard.
And a prerogative to need one or the other at any time without warning.
